Connect More!

Easily pull student slides into your own presentation for quick viewing of progress and to provide individualized feedback. Connect More! allows teachers to pull in three different ways:

1) Pull slide by title, this method allows the teacher to grab a specific slide from every student’s presentation for a quick formative assessment

2) Pull slides by number, this method allows teachers to grab a specific slide when source decks were distributed in a known order

3) Pull ALL Slide, this method allows the teacher to grab a snapshot of every slide in all students presentations

 INSTRUCTIONS

Installing Connect More!

Install Slip-in-Slide from the G-Suite Marketplace. If the add-on will not install, talk with your IT department about whitelisting the add-on. When installed, choose “Start” in the Connect More! add-on menu. Once there you will be slipping slides to student in a few easy steps.

Pull student slides

Connect More uses the current presentation as hub to look at an entire classes assignment. To do this the user selects the folder which contains the student presentations, and then pulls the desired slides (By Title, By Number, or All) into the current presentation. The process is done automatically extracting each slide that meets the criteria (FYI, if multiple slides have the same title in a student presentation, each of them will be pulled into the hub) while also creating an alphabetized index (perfect for use with Google Classroom naming structure). Additionally, each student receives a unique colored corner that links to their main presentation. If students have multiple slides in the hub, they will each have the same unique colored corner.

Provide feedback (or update as necessary)

Now that the students slides reside in the hub the user can pride feedback. This can be done by adding new elements to the slide including text boxes, shapes, images, …. Only new elements will be treated as feedback when the user decides to push the feedback into each of the student presentations.

Note: If it is necessary to update a students slides there will be an “Update” button in the corner. Please Do Not use that button, but instead use the “Update Slides that Have Changed!” option in the add-on’s menu. This will maintain the integrity of the colored corners which are critical to Connect More!

Send Feedback

Once the feedback has been prepared by the user, simply use the “Send Feedback” option within the add-on’s menu to send feedback for the current slide, or for all slides.

Note: Only slides with feedback will be pushed to the students.

  • Below explains why the Google Drive scopes are required for the add-on to function.

    1) Connect More uses the “auth/drive.readonly” scope conjunction with the picker used to select the Google Classroom assignment (and subsequent folder ) or by specifically picking the folder containing the student presentations .  The tool iterates through the contents of that folder and pulls the slides from the student presentations based on the teachers selections , using the teachers own editing rights to access content in each presentation.  Once the teacher provides feedback the tool then iterates back through the slides, opens the student presentations, and adds the teachers feedback to the students slides. Since the files are not manually selected by the teacher, I am NOT able to use the “auth/drive.file” scope, instead I must use the “auth/drive” scope which grants these additional rights.

    2) To my knowledge, the scopes cannot be modified to remove a certain component such as deleting.  The add-on does go thru a review process by Google to ensure there is no malicious intent, and I have no intent other than to help teachers teach and engage their students in rigorous content.   This product (and all of my others) come out of coaching teachers and finding areas in which they face challenges, and I then code solutions to help meet those challenges.  I do want to ensure you that the program only does what is described which is to pull the desired slides (all, by number, or by title) from the student presentations, add them to the teachers presentation (allowing for quick review and feedback), and to send the feedback back into the student presentations.   Nothing else is done.  No files are removed, no slides for that matter.  This script simply enables the teacher to do something that would be to time consuming for students and teachers to consider doing.
